TRAINING
PAN runs a lot of courses for different people.
We like to talk with you first to find out what your needs are.
The course here is just an example.
There is also a sample timetable which you can look at.
Self-Advocacy and Empowerment
This short course has grown out of a very successful bit of research done by PAN not long ago.
PAN was working with people with learning disabilities.
The research showed people with learning disabilities how they could speak up for themselves.
It has been put together so that service users, staff and carers will find out about speaking up groups and how good they are for people with learning disabilities and others who might find it hard to get people to listen to them.
We have found out that it is not just people with learning disabilities who are not listened to, but almost anyone who seems 'different' or who seems to be a threat of some kind.
A lot of people think that the idea of speaking up groups can be used for many groups of people who think they are being ignored.
- People like immigrants and refugees who can't speak English very well.
- Like other people with disabilities who maybe can't speak or hear very well.
- A lot of young people who feel they are not being listened to say they want speaking up groups.
There are a lot of people who want their own speaking up groups.
The course will:
- Show the difference between good and bad speaking up groups.
- Explain how good speaking up groups work and why bad speaking up groups don't.
- Help people learn about how to make speaking up groups work.
- Show you some good things people can do to help speaking up groups work
- Say why there are some things you should not do.
