Hurricane Season Is Here: Let’s Get Ready Together

Hurricane season in Florida runs from June through November. Even if experts expect fewer storms this year, it only takes one hurricane to affect our homes, schools, and communities. The best time to prepare is before a storm is on the way.
For people with disabilities and their families, planning ahead is especially important. Power outages, transportation disruptions, and evacuations can create extra challenges for those who rely on medications, medical equipment, or daily support services. Taking a few simple steps now can help you and your loved ones stay safe and reduce stress during an emergency.
Build Your Support Team
Create a personal support network of family members, friends, neighbors, caregivers, or coworkers who can help before, during, or after a disaster. Try to identify at least three people you can call if you need assistance. Make sure someone you trust knows where you keep your emergency supplies and important documents.
Think About Your Family’s Needs
Every family is different. Take a few minutes to think about what you or your loved one may need during an emergency:
· Do you have enough medication for several days?
· Do you use medical equipment that needs electricity?
· Will you need transportation if you have to evacuate?
· What assistive devices or communication tools should you bring?
Writing down these needs ahead of time can make emergencies easier to manage.
Make an Emergency Plan
Keep a simple emergency plan that includes:
· Emergency contact names and phone numbers.
· Doctors, pharmacies, and medical information.
· A family meeting place if you become separated.
· A list of medications and medical equipment.
· Copies of important documents stored in a waterproof bag or folder.
Prepare an Emergency Kit
Your emergency kit should include supplies for everyone in your household. Consider packing:
· Medications and medical supplies.
· Water and nonperishable food.
· Flashlights and extra batteries.
· Phone chargers and portable battery packs.
· Assistive devices and backup equipment, if needed.
· Comfort items or sensory tools for children.
· Copies of important documents and emergency contacts.
If you use a wheelchair or other mobility equipment, know its size and transportation needs in case you have to leave your home quickly.
Register for Special Assistance
You may want to register with your local Special Needs Registry if you:
· Need electricity to operate medical equipment.
· Need transportation to evacuate because of a medical condition.
· Need assistance accessing medications or medical care during a disaster.
Contact your local emergency management office to learn about services available in your area.
Stay Connected
Follow trusted local weather updates and emergency alerts. Check in with friends, neighbors, and family members who may need extra support. A simple phone call or text message can make a big difference.
At the Advocacy Network on Disabilities, we believe emergency preparedness should be inclusive and accessible for everyone. By preparing together, we can build a safer and stronger community for all.
