World Mental Health Day: You Are Not Alone, and Your Story Matters

Today, October 10, is World Mental Health Day. This year’s theme from the World Federation for Mental Health is “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.” We love that theme, because it says something we believe deeply: people who live with mental health conditions know best what they need.
So if you’re struggling right now, we want you to hear this first. What you’re feeling is real, and it matters. You are not weak. You are not a burden. Mental health struggles can happen to anyone, and they don’t look the same for everyone. Maybe you feel sad or empty. Maybe you feel worried all the time. Maybe it’s hard to sleep, focus, or get out of bed. However it shows up for you, you deserve care and kindness, including from yourself.
For some people, a mental health condition is also a disability. For others, it isn’t. Either way, your experience deserves to be taken seriously. We also know that reaching out can feel scary or exhausting. Sometimes the hardest part is just knowing who to call. That’s why we put together this list of places in Miami-Dade and Broward where you can find support. Most are free, and many have staff who speak Spanish and Haitian Creole.
If You Need Help Right Now
Call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. It’s free, confidential, and open 24/7. You don’t have to be thinking about suicide to reach out, and you don’t need to have the right words. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. You can ask for a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officer, who has extra training in helping people during a mental health crisis.
Miami-Dade County Resources
- The Village South Mobile Response Team: Call 1-800-435-7968 (1-800-HELP-YOU), available 24/7. A mental health clinician answers, and if you need in-person help, a team can come to you. It’s free for Miami-Dade residents of all ages.
- 211 Miami: Dial 211 or call 305-631-4211 (available 24/7), or text your ZIP code to 898211. Trained specialists help you find counseling and local services. Support is available in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole, with interpreters for other languages.

Prefer Not to Talk on the Phone?
Not everyone feels comfortable talking on the phone, and that’s okay. You can get free, confidential support by text or chat, any time:
- Text: Send a message to 988.
- Chat online: Visit the 988 Lifeline chat.
- Videophone or TTY: If you’re Deaf or hard of hearing, you can call 988 from a videophone to reach a counselor who signs. If you use a TTY (text telephone), dial 711, then 988.
Healing Is Possible
If you take away just one thing today, please let it be this: things can get better.
So many people who once felt completely hopeless are now living full, meaningful lives. Healing isn’t always a straight line. There are ups and downs. But it is real, and having the right support makes all the difference.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
Reaching out for help is never a sign of weakness. It takes real courage, and it’s one of the best ways to take care of yourself.
Not ready to reach out today? That’s completely okay. Save this page, write down a number or two, or share this list with a friend or family member who might need it later.
Supporting someone you love? You don’t have to fix everything or have all the answers. Often, the most powerful thing you can do is listen, believe them, and keep showing up. Your care matters more than you know.
Better Days Are Ahead
Wherever you are on your journey today, please remember: you matter, your story matters, and healing is possible. At the Advocacy Network on Disabilities, we remain fiercely committed to championing your voice and working toward a community where everyone belongs, feels valued, and receives the support they deserve. You don’t have to face this alone.
