Building Inclusive Workplaces: Our CEO Presents at the Miami Foundation

_THO9036

This month, our Director and CEO had the honor of presenting to the entire staff of the Miami Foundation. The presentation highlighted the Advocacy Network on Disabilities’ work, the prevalence of neurodivergence, and practical ways to foster workplaces where accessibility is the default—not the exception.

The Prevalence of Neurodivergence in the Workplace

Nearly 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. lives with at least one disability, and neurodivergence is a significant part of that reality. Conditions such as autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and other neurological differences shape how individuals experience the workplace. While many neurodivergent individuals earn college degrees, their employment rates remain far lower than their neurotypical peers. These disparities are not due to a lack of talent, but to barriers in workplace design and culture.

Practical Applications for Supervisors and Coworkers

Creating a workplace that is inclusive by default benefits everyone. Staff learned practical strategies that supervisors and coworkers can apply, including:

  • Support authenticity: Encourage people to bring their whole selves to work without fear of stigma.

  • Create psychological safety: Build an environment of trust where employees can speak up, share concerns, and contribute ideas without penalty.

  • Value cognitive diversity: Recognize and celebrate different communication styles, problem-solving approaches, and perspectives.

  • Build accessible processes: From meetings to project planning, ensure systems welcome all minds—so no one has to request “special” accommodations.

Gratitude and Connection

We were very happy to connect with the Miami Foundation staff and share our knowledge with them. We thank them for all they do—not only for our organization, but for so many other nonprofits across Miami. It was wonderful to meet the entire team, make new friends, and strengthen the bonds that allow us to build a more inclusive community together.

Moving Forward Together

Inclusion is not just the right thing to do—it’s good business. By valuing neurodivergent employees and creating accessible workplaces, organizations strengthen their teams, improve retention, and unlock innovation.

We are proud to share this message with the Miami Foundation’s staff and look forward to continued partnerships that move us closer to a world where everyone belongs.
